Surviving the Wilderness

After Jesus’ baptism where he was affirmed by Father God as His pleasing Son, Jesus then enters the wilderness. From a moment of recognition, power, pouring out of the Holy Spirit comes desolation.  

When you have great times with God, breakthrough, affirmation, joy, when the Holy Spirit is tangibly present and affects you, it can be after such times that a wilderness season comes. From a high moment you can experience a low time. This happened for Jesus, so you should not be surprised when it also happens to you. We read in Matthew that, ‘Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.’ This sounds odd, doesn't it?! That Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. Jesus was purposefully led to undergo temptation. From being affirmed by Father God, he then had to go through significant hardship and temptation. Do you ever feel that this happens to you, that something difficult occurs when you have had an encounter with God or taken a step of faith and obedience? Next time, do not be surprised. The enemy wishes to undo the great work and affirmation that God has given, and God allows it. Do not lose your salvation, hope, promises, deliverance, breakthrough, or recognition of the love and grace of God, because the enemy wants to distract you. God allows you to experience such wilderness times to give you opportunity to exercise the faith you have and to grow in it. Satan will also use this time to get you off track by offering you enticing promises that will compromise your faith and disrupt the plan of God in your life, so learn to hold strong as Jesus did. 

Matthew 4:1–11 (ESV): 

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written, 

  “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, 

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” 

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, 

  “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ 

and 

  “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, 

lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” 

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, 

  “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God 

and him only shall you serve.’ ” 

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. 

This must have been incredibly hard for Jesus. Think of the conflicting emotions, as well as the temptations on a worn out body and mind. When you are tired, hungry and emotionally drained it is harder to resist temptation. Whether it is the temptation to respond in an unholy way, eat what you shouldn’t, pick up bad habits, get angry, lazy or distant. When your body and mind are stressed, it is harder to think clearly and behave well. It is harder, but not impossible as Jesus proves. Jesus saw this for what it was, he was not fooled or deceived. He knew that this was the devil’s work trying to disrupt his sense of identity, and to use his God-given power and authority to fulfill his own selfish desires. Like having some bread because he was ‘hungry’ - i think that is an understatement after 40 days! When you are next tempted to sin, to cut corners, to behave in a way not consistent with the faith you possess, stop. Think about who is really trying to be in control here. Is this the enemy trying to take you out? Can you even imagine if Jesus gave in to even one of those temptations? He would have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God like the rest of us, he would not have proved that he is indeed the Son of God, pure, holy and completely good. So, how does Jesus do it? 

Jesus had the great advantage of knowing God, really knowing Him. Jesus had lived with and loved God in heaven, so he really knows the Father’s character, His power, His expectations, His words. Jesus also knew and accepted who he was in relation to God. Jesus is His Son, and also human. Therefore his life was to be lived in submission to God. Jesus knew that this was the best for him and for the whole of creation. Due to his obedience in his life, death and resurrection, you too can know that closeness with God the Father, and have the same identity as His son or daughter. Invest in your relationship with Him. Spend your life listening, speaking and thinking of God. Consider His words and guidance. Invest in honouring God with your life, then you will know the kind of things that you can and should say yes or no to. 

You can see that Jesus also uses Scripture to combat the devil’s temptations. So, read and understand what is written. Every word in the Bible is true and written by God himself, so use it to help you. Jesus did. he did not feel like saying no to having some bread or power, so he could not rely on his own understanding or emotions. Instead, he trusted in what is always good and true - the Word of God. Although Satan gets wise to this and also tries to use Scripture to persuade Jesus to give into his schemes (v6). So, be warned. The enemy can twist and distort the truth to make sin sound good for Satan knows the Bible too. It is not enough to be able to recite verses, for that is what Satan did, you also need to know what they mean and the God behind the words. When you hear someone quoted and you know the person behind those words, you know if the quote is giving a true reflection of what they are like or is taking things out of context. Jesus could see that this is what Satan was doing. He was taking the words of God and using them to imply something that God did not intend. Jesus knows God better. He knows the content, context and character behind Scripture and stands firm based on his knowledge of God. This is how Jesus overcame temptation, and this is how you can too. Find out about God. Learn what the Bible says and what it means, understand the God behind the words, get to know Him, and hold onto what is true. Then you will be victorious when temptation comes. You can resist temptation, you can overcome sin. It is hard, but you can do it. 

Allow Jesus, The Word of God and the character of God give you strength and show you how. Be prepared and ‘Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.’ (1 Peter 5;8). The devil will wait, he is patient. He will seek to get you in a weak, despondent, distracted moment or when you are having such fun you are off-guard. You need to live as if there is always a hungry lion in wait. If you do, you’ll be watchful, armed and prepared and would create a strategy. The strategy is to learn about God, obey Him, and know His words and promises. Be armed and dangerous with your understanding of Scripture then the devil will leave (v11). 

Lies or Truth?

 Psalm 119:161–168 (ESV): 

Sin and Shin

 161  Princes persecute me without cause, 

but my heart stands in awe of your words. 

 162  I rejoice at your word 

like one who finds great spoil. 

 163  I hate and abhor falsehood, 

but I love your law. 

 164  Seven times a day I praise you 

for your righteous rules. 

 165  Great peace have those who love your law; 

nothing can make them stumble. 

 166  I hope for your salvation, O Lord, 

and I do your commandments. 

 167  My soul keeps your testimonies; 

I love them exceedingly. 

 168  I keep your precepts and testimonies, 

for all my ways are before you. 

Do you ‘hate and abhor falsehood’? Or do you tell lies, big ones, small ones, ones to keep secrets or those that you think benefit others? 

All lying should be hated - no matter the purpose or the context, and God does mind if you lie.

The Word of God is truth, so lies are the opposite of God’s Word. If you are person of faith and profess that you love God, you need to be mindful of what you are saying and promising. Are you truly living in The Truth, or have you made up your own rules about acceptable lying? Some people lie with good intention; not to offend others, to protect, maybe to keep something a surprise. Yet lying is still lying and it is the opposite of truth. So, you need to consider whose side are you on; God’s or Satan’s? For Satan is the Prince of lies and when you enter into not telling the truth, you are entering into his domain - is that where you want to be?

Don’t let Satan have any power over you or in your life. Learn instead to abhor falsehood and love God’s Law (v163). It is not easy, and it can be painful to be honest at times. It certainly takes consideration to be loving and truthful at the same time, and sometimes it is best to say nothing. Honesty is beautiful, but needs to be used in humility to God and be wrapped in love. The promise for those who live a life honouring God and His Word is, ‘Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble’. Is this your story? When you live a life of honesty, loving God's Word and abhorring falsehood, you can enjoy peace. If you want to live a peaceful life, ensure that honesty is an important attribute in your life, and stand continually on The Word of God. 

Psalm 119:169–176 (ESV):

 169  Let my cry come before you, O Lord; 

give me understanding according to your word! 

 170  Let my plea come before you; 

deliver me according to your word. 

 171  My lips will pour forth praise, 

for you teach me your statutes. 

 172  My tongue will sing of your word, 

for all your commandments are right. 

 173  Let your hand be ready to help me, 

for I have chosen your precepts. 

 174  I long for your salvation, O Lord, 

and your law is my delight. 

 175  Let my soul live and praise you, 

and let your rules help me. 

 176  I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, 

for I do not forget your commandments. 

Do not try to understand the concepts of society, or the way of the world - don’t waste your time on that. They are fickle and change, lying abounds and different views and perspectives exist. You will never get a clear understanding as they are complex. Instead, ask God, 'give me understanding according to your word!'. This will help you live life.If you want some understanding, go to God. Read Scripture, ask Him and allow your understanding of life be formed by the author of life. 

Whatever you are concerned about, whether it is that your circumstances are confusing or painful, the society you are in blind, the changing of laws nonsensical or concerning, the lives of others lost or gone astray, go to God’s Word. It is only through seeking and listening to God's voice of truth that anything makes sense. Do not concern yourself with understanding the World - the world doesn't make sense, it is lost and confused in it's denial of good and of God, so why seek to understand that anyway? Instead make God's Law your delight, allow His rules to help you and remember that all of God's commandments are right (v172 - 175).

God’s words bring salvation, they can bring joy, hope, truth and help. Therefore take delight in them and do not allow the confusion of life overtake your mind. Hold onto Bible verses, remember truth, and the cares of this world will find their rightful position in subjection to Him. 

Submit, resist, get close

Through this letter, James seems to be quite good at telling people off doesn’t he?! He has a lot to say about how we can get living a life of faith wrong. He shows that how we behave, speak, conduct ourselves and use our intelligence matters. It matters to God, so it should matter to you. In this letter James has been instructing and explaining how to be wholeheartedly devoted to the faith you have because he wants you to take following God seriously. He has been pointing out several issues to help you really consider what your life is about and what you are living for. Are you living for God, the world or yourself? 

If you want to follow God other things need to give way and you need to assess the way you are living and speaking if  you want to grow as a disciple and become wise. Have you been taking onboard James’s instructions? And as you consider your life, are you honouring God with it all or not at all?

Living a life honouring God means considering; your speech, how you treat others, how you suffer, being fair, considerate, putting into practice acts of faith, gaining wisdom, being quiet, avoiding arguments and getting out of sin -  it is a lot, and it sounds like hard work. How can you really get there?

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. 

James 4:7–8 (ESV)

They key to gaining ground in your life with the things that James has been pinpointing, and that you know are growth points for you, is this; 'Submit yourselves therefore to God.' If you really want to overcome and grow as a follower of Jesus, then you have no choice but to submit. Submitting to God means putting yourself under His authority, allowing God to have the say over every area of your life. Letting Him choose how you live, speak and behave, in the big things as well as the small ones. The faith you have in God should be evidenced by how you submit to Him. As a follower of God you cannot just keep doing whatever you want. What you do, say, watch, listen to, attend, even what you eat and drink, where you work, rest and relax - all of this should be submitted to God, is it? You will be tempted to just keep hold of and in control of the things you want because you like them, you want them, you feel they are ok, but is the hold those things have on you ok? What may be ok for someone else to have or do may not be ok for you because you know it causes you an unease or anger if those things could be taken away. Those things need to be submitted to God because it will give you freedom. It is part of resisting the devil. The enemy wants you to be stuck and restricted in your faith and to doubt how much you really love God and want to follow Him. The devil loves half-hearted, non-commital christianity.

James doesn't want you to fall for the enemies schemes of complacency. The word of God says, 'Resist the devil, and he will flee from you'! Once you have decided to submit to God and do what He wants rather than your own way, you will be able to say no to what you know you need to, and once you have stood firm and resisted, the enemy will run away - that’s a promise! Just as you run away from sin and temptation, even those little things that you could persuade yourself don't matter, as you run away from those, the enemy will scarper! Why? because you are positioning yourself more into God's presence. You are choosing to get close to God, and the devil cannot go there.

'Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.' If you choose to submit to God, turn away from the devil and invest in your relationship with God, then God will get close to you. God is waiting. He is waiting for His invite into your life. He is waiting for you to give up the old, to break free from what is hindering you, to give up on sin. He is waiting to get in close to you and your life so that you can know His love, compassion, mercy and friendship in greater measure.

So today we have seen that there are two promises in today’s verse; resist the devil and he will flee, and get close to God and He will come close to you. Do you want to see the enemy running from you and know the presence of God more in your life? Both of these promises stem from the command to submit to God - that’s how you get that relationship with God on a new level, that’s how you overcome sin, that’s how you can grow as a disciple and in wisdom. So what are you going to choose to live for from today? What are you choosing to submit to?
