Sing, Ascribe and let

 Psalm 96:1–13 (ESV):

Oh sing to the Lord a new song;

sing to the Lord, all the earth!

 2  Sing to the Lord, bless his name;

tell of his salvation from day to day.

 3  Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvellous works among all the peoples!

 4  For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;

he is to be feared above all gods.

 5  For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,

but the Lord made the heavens.

 6  Splendour and majesty are before him;

strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

 7  Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,

ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!

 8  Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;

bring an offering, and come into his courts!

 9  Worship the Lord in the splendour of holiness;

tremble before him, all the earth!

 10  Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!

Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;

he will judge the peoples with equity.”

 11  Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;

let the sea roar, and all that fills it;

 12  let the field exult, and everything in it!

  Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy

 13  before the Lord, for he comes,

for he comes to judge the earth.

  He will judge the world in righteousness,

and the peoples in his faithfulness.

There seems to be some repetition in this psalm, with the instructions to ‘sing to the Lord’, then ‘ascribe to the Lord ‘and ‘let’. So we will focus on those three elements today as we study this scripture.

- ‘sing to the Lord’; a new song, all the earth, and bless His name. These are the aspects attached to the action of singing. It is a powerful thing to sing about something. Someone has thought about a tune, instruments and the lyrics and put them together to build something memorable and repeatable. Songs can help us recall things and change our mood, therefore is important to consider what you are singing about. The instruction here is to ‘sing to the Lord’, and you can sing to Him about multiple things; the earth, His qualities and salvation. You will never run out of things to sing about if God is your topic. Singing to God is far more powerful than singing about your favourite team or alongside secular music. The instruction in this psalm is to sing something new to God and to bless Him through song, and the whole earth somehow joins in this celebration of who He is. So, whenever you sing, consider who you are singing for and about, does it do good to God’s ears? Songs are an opportunity to declare God's glory, remind people of His marvellous works and to tell of His salvation. Is that what you do when you sing?

- ‘Ascribe to the Lord’ - ascribe means to regard something as being. When the psalmist says to ascribe to God glory and strength, it is not to say that we need to treat God as if He is glorious and strong, for He is. It is us who struggle to comprehend the reality and extent of His glory and strength. Therefore the encouragement is, even if you don’t feel it or fully believe it, practice thinking of God as glorious and strong. Keep telling yourself the truth that He is even when your circumstances, emotions or thoughts tell you something different. Keep applying the truth about God to your heart, mind and spirit, and inspire others to see it too. None of us will ever know on this Earth the extent of God’s glory and strength, so we need to keep reminding ourselves to 'ascribe' these qualities to God. As you choose to see God as glorious and strong, as verses 8 and 9 suggest, it will lead you to worship through generous giving and joy. Plus your eyes will be opened to see something more of how awesome God is.

let’ = allow, permit, give freedom to. The verses that repeat the word ‘let’, v 12-13, talk about allowing the different facets of creation express joy. You may wonder how we can do that, for we ourselves are created and have no control over the seas roaring, trees singing or the fields exulting. So, i think there are two messages in this. One is that when we look at the heavens, seas, fields and the trees, do you look at them and feel happy? Do they remind you of the One who made them? When the natural world looks beautiful or sounds terrifying, do you consider how awesome the One who made them is? That is how we can allow nature to declare it’s joy. By choosing to see God in and through it all and declaring His goodness in it. Take time to allow nature to declare God’s vastness, beauty, creativity and power to you. Do you ever do that? Do you just allow the complexity of a tree show you something of God’s ingenuity? Does the power of the waters signify God’s power to you, or what the roar of His voice must be like? I encourage you, take time to consider what God has made. Even just one flower, rock, or blade of grass. These things declare His joy, glory and strength, so take time to listen to what they can reveal of Our God. The other aspect of allowing nature to bring joy is, do you respect and protect the natural world? Doing your bit to tidy up creation, stop pollution, and not cause damage to what God has made allows these things to continue to bring revelation and joy for generations to come. This is how you can permit the skies, earth and seas continue to display God’s beautiful splendour, by ensuring that you do your part to appreciate and protect them. Allow them continue to show others the joy and beauty of God, for they too were created to worship. So let the trees continue singing, fields exulting and seas roaring, and join in with their praise to the Lord.

His works and Words

 Psalm 19:1–14 (ESV):

1  The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

2  Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge.

3  There is no speech, nor are there words,

whose voice is not heard.

4  Their voice goes out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world.

In them he has set a tent for the sun,

5  which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,

and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.

6  Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

and its circuit to the end of them,

and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7  The law of the Lord is perfect,

reviving the soul;

the testimony of the Lord is sure,

making wise the simple;

8  the precepts of the Lord are right,

rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the Lord is pure,

enlightening the eyes;

9  the fear of the Lord is clean,

enduring forever;

the rules of the Lord are true,

and righteous altogether.

10  More to be desired are they than gold,

even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey

and drippings of the honeycomb.

11  Moreover, by them is your servant warned;

in keeping them there is great reward.

12  Who can discern his errors?

Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

13  Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;

let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless,

and innocent of great transgression.

14  Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

be acceptable in your sight,

O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

The glory of God is spoken by all of creation. Day and night. Throughout the world. No-one has an excuse to not have heard from God - if they simply look around, walk or breathe they can experience what God has spoken! The sky, day, night and even the heat of the sun, speak of the truth, power, authority, glory, understanding and strength of God. Do you hear God's voice through these things? The daily cycle, the beginnings and ends, all tell you something of God if you take time to consider them. No matter where you are or what you are doing you cannot hide from the revelation of God through nature. God has spoken the universe into being and He speaks through it to all mankind to display who He is. Are you listening to His voice through it?

After considering what creation tells him of God, David abruptly switches to speaking of the words of God within the Bible. Both the world and the Word carry the voice of God within them and demonstrate something of who God is. Creation can establish awe and wonder as we see God as a powerful creator and sustainer, yet this is not the full picture of who God is. If you just look at the works of an artist, you may get some idea of who they are, what they like or are passionate about, but the works will not reveal the fullness of their character. In order to understand the artist, you need to listen to their words as well as admire their works. The same is true of God - You can begin to appreciate something of who God is through nature as they are His works, but how much more can you understand if you also hear His Words?!

You need the Word of God, the Bible, to deepen and widen your understanding of God. The Bible will  enlighten you as to who God is, and has great benefits for you. In this psalm David tells how the Scriptures; revive, refresh, increase knowledge and understanding, give joy, and enlighten. So if you need any of those things today, open your Bible and see how God will speak to you. The Word of God will show you how perfect, loving, strong and reliable God is. You will also discover more about His purity, everlasting nature, righteousness and His expectations and rules for your life. As you discover more about God, you will also find out more about yourself, and you will grow when you take onboard the revelation and instruction of God. You will become more satisfied as you discover the reality of life and treasure the fact that God has really spoken to you - through thousands of years and thousands of people. His words are written for your benefit, are you taking His words onboard and allowing them to influence your life?

Considering both God’s power and sustenance through creation, and what the Bible teaches can; inspire, create awe and wonder, comfort, give security, joy, wisdom, truth, advice, instruction, warning and reward as well as revive and enlighten you. Do you need some of that today? As whatever it is you need, God can provide it for you, are you allowing Him to?

By considering God's works and opening His Word you will receive great treasure, it will change your life.

 9  the fear of the Lord is clean,

enduring forever;

the rules of the Lord are true,

and righteous altogether.

10  More to be desired are they than gold,

even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey

and drippings of the honeycomb.

The truth

6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6.

Here Jesus is telling us a few things about who he is, last week we looked at him being the way, this week we are going to ponder the fact that Jesus claims to be 'the truth' as well.

If we consider this statement that Jesus is 'the truth', then this means that truth has existed before the world began as Jesus also existed. Before creation, truth existed. Truth is also found in a person, not as a concept or quality. In the first chapter of this book of John, Jesus is also described as being ‘the word’ that created and spoke into being all things, therefore truth was evident and in existence then, right from the very start of all we know. Truth was present in Jesus, and through his words.Truth has existed for longer than the world that we are dependent on, In fact, Jesus and truth have actually been the foundation of all of these things. Truth is found in Jesus and through his words.

Jesus came to Earth as a human and so became the embodiment of truth, revealing who God is. When he came to Earth as a human, Jesus revealed the truth about who he is and who his Father is. Whatever traits we see in Jesus, we can know that Father God has the same.

Therefore, if we want to live honest, truth-filled lives, and as Jesus is the truth, surely we need to learn to understand the world around us through him. Otherwise we are not living in truth, are we? If Jesus is the truth and the creator of all that is around us, then it makes sense to try to appreciate all that life entails through the one who made it. When we do we are able to put things into the right context. If we remove Jesus from our thinking, then how are we approaching the situations, people and the world each and every day? If Jesus is truth and we decline to live with him, then what are we living with? How are we assessing the things and people we encounter?

There are many things in this world that vie for our attention and that claim to be true, just and right, but do you take time to test these things and see if they aline with who Jesus is, what he taught and represents? Others’ arguments, values and experiences may be strong and persuasive but does what they are bringing agrees with scripture which is true? Do you stop to reflect and ask yourself if Jesus would have had those theories, acted in that way or taught these things? If you know he wouldn’t then you know that these things are not based in the ultimate truth.

It may be that the words spoken by Jesus are hard to understand, or difficult to take onboard, but it doesn’t mean that they are wrong. Just because things may be hard to accept and live, doesn’t mean that they are irrelevant, should be ignored or are simply untrue. It just means that we don't like it.

Jesus, and truth have existed before this planet and before time. Surely that is something dependable, reliable and certain that you can build your life upon. After all, the theories and ideas of man last a season, change frequently and eventually are often discarded and mocked. Yet, Jesus the Son of God, has outlasted them all. The truth has lived, has created this Earth and walked this Earth, and is still alive, living with His Father in heaven. Do you live with that truth in your life?

Are you grieving God?

Going through Genesis, we firstly see the joy and wonder of creation, and the imagination, purity and delight of God in what He has made, but soon it all goes wrong….

Why does it go wrong?

Well, pretty much because mankind want to do things their way. Adam and Eve were tempted, and then the initial mistrust in God then leads into sin, depravity and destruction as we through the synopsis of chapter 5. Then we hit chapter 6, and the sad reality;

‘The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. *6*And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.’

Genesis 6:5-6

God allowed, and still allows, humans to make up their own minds, to have opinions and choices, but what does getting our own way lead to? If we take Adam and Eve as an example, and consider the reality of our own lives, we can see that doubting God and His goodness leads to thinking we know better and not doing as He wants. This can commence the rapid descent into sin, just like it did for Adam and Eve.

Without challenging the doubt of God, and remembering who God really is did not end well for the first humans in existence, for the generations that followed them it ended up with; murder, boasting, polygamy, unhealthy relationships and further distance put between God and His own creation. The same can happen for you, in your life, for your descendants.

What would God see if He looked at you life today?

You have a choice. You get to decide whether you live a life faithful to God or not.

I am really struck by the last 5 words of verse 6, that the sin on the Earth, 'grieved him to his heart.’ I want no part of grieving God, do you?

Do you know why God grieves? Do you realise that only things that are dearly loved are dearly grieved? It is because of God’s enormous love for you that you grieve Him when you do things wrong, and lead your life on a trajectory further and further away from Him. It is not because God hates you that He grieves, but because of the depth of love He has for you - His creation, a person made in His very own image.

Take a moment to consider the immensity of God's love for you, and then reflect on the way your life is going, what direction are you taking? Are you making decisions that are moving towards or away from Him?

Male and Female He created them...

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” *19*Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. *20*The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. *21*So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. *22*And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. *23*Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

*24*Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. *25*And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

 Genesis 2:18-25

Man and woman were made by God. At different times, but both hand-crafted by God for purpose.

At the start of this passage, God recognises that man should not be alone. As humankind is created in the image of God, then we are created for community.

We function best with others, ‘it is not good that the man should be alone’ is as true now as when it was written. Humans are social beings and should be around others for life to be ‘good’. Good because we can support and challenge one another, we can bring company, fun, love and kindness to each other. Of course, we can also wind each other up too, but since the beginning of creation it has been noted that man alone is not a good thing. So, if you find yourself alone, why is that, and is there anything you can do about it? Being in community with others is what you are created for, it is in those relationships that you can more truly reflect who God is.

This section of scripture gives us an insight into how important relationships are to God, especially the male/female relationships, and the significance of being a man or a woman. In today’s society, the distinction between male and female is being eroded away. That is no good thing, we are distinctly different created to be who we are in the body’s we are in. The Bible here begins to tell us what a woman and a man should be.

The first thing we find out about a woman is that she was made as ‘a helper for for him’  as well as some company for him - the woman was created to help, assist and be a partner to the man.  Some people do not like that and see being a helper as a bad thing, but being a helper is not a lowly function. it is a powerful purpose. Man would not be man without woman helping him. Plus, the Holy Spirit is often described as a helper, so for those that consider being a helper a derogatory or demeaning term are completely wrong, God is a helper and there’s nothing lowly or demeaning in His character!

The Seventh Day

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. *2*And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. *3*So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

Genesis 2:1

God rested, most of us realise this fact about the 7th day, but did you notice that God also blessed the 7th day and made it holy? He didn’t do that  for His own benefit, after all, how would God bless himself? Therefore it must be for the benefit of His creation.

So,  what does it mean that the 7th day is blessed and holy?

This 7th day, at the start of creation is marked out as significant and highlighted as different rom every other day. Every other day, things were made, God worked, but this day, something different happened, God rested, therefore signifying that it was set apart and significant.

God, at the very start gave the 7th day high value, He wanted the 7th day to look different from the rest of the week. He dedicated it to rest and reflection.

Does your 7th day look different to every other day? Do you set it apart in some way?

God next tells us this day is ‘blessed’. This means it has good bestowed upon it and it is consecrated. Therefore it should be a day that is used for noble purpose. It should be a day of contemplation and enjoyment of the work already completed, a day when there’s a different focus and routine. A day that we choose to do something good, and where we appreciate the good in life.

The 7th day is also holy, therefore it must be set apart for religious purpose, dedicated to God. This conjures the ideas of meeting others with the same beliefs, building and encouraging one another up, declaring God’s goodness, doing something with a God-ward focus.  Taking time to see the good we, others and God have done and appreciating that. Sharing time acknowledging the creator.

This is why, as christians, we usually meet up on a Sunday, it’s not just some cultural tradition, but a mandate that God has infused into the creation of the world! God has spoken that this day is blessed and holy - are you ensuring that it has this significant place in your life, are you treating your 7th day with his value like God does?
